I had wasted so much money on eye vitamins that did nothing that I almost did not bother with one more. Somewhere in the second month I caught myself reading a recipe card at arm's length in my dim kitchen without squinting. I actually stopped and stood there.

My doctor told me to watch and wait. That was the whole plan. I was not going to sit still for another two years while it got worse, so I started this. The grey patch in the middle has not grown since March and I read the paper again in the mornings.

What I missed most was faces. My granddaughter would sit right across the table and I could see her hair and her shirt, but the middle of her was just soft. Two months in and I can see her smile again. I never told anyone how bad it had got. I am telling people now.

The part I did not expect was driving. Oncoming headlights used to wipe the road out for a second or two and I had started making excuses not to go anywhere after dark. Last month I drove my wife home from dinner and did not think about it once until we were in the driveway.

I took the big name eye vitamin from the pharmacy for four years because that is what the shelf told me to buy. When I finally turned both bottles over and put them side by side I understood why nothing had changed. I have been on this since February and the difference is not subtle.

My daughter ordered it for me because I had stopped doing the crossword and she noticed before I said anything. I did not expect much. I finished the Sunday puzzle in ink last weekend for the first time since the winter, and she cried a little when I told her.
